Gas station POS system: pumps, lottery and EMV

Five things a gas station POS must do, from pump integration to lottery and EMV at the pump, and what NRS Petro costs.

An NRS POS on the counter of a gas station convenience store

A gas station is two businesses sharing one counter: fuel outside and a convenience store inside. Most POS systems only handle the store. Here is what to look for in a gas station POS, and how NRS Petro handles it.

1. It has to talk to your pumps

This is the big one. A gas station POS needs direct integration with your dispensers, so the cashier can authorize pumps, see each one's status and ring fuel and merchandise on one ticket.

NRS Petro integrates with Gilbarco, Wayne, Bennett and other major dispensers, and supports fleet cards and dual pricing.

2. One report for the whole shift

At the end of a shift you want fuel, inside sales, lottery, card payments and cash in one report, not three systems to reconcile. NRS Petro closes fuel and inside sales out together.

3. EMV at the pump

The card networks have moved fraud liability to the station: if a counterfeit card is used at a pump that can't read chips, the chargeback lands on you, not the card issuer. That is the EMV liability shift.

You don't always need new pumps. NRS offers two paths:

  • The full NRS Petro platform with a site controller, lottery automation, scan data and more
  • The EMV EZ Pump retrofit, which upgrades supported older pumps to chip and contactless

We cover this in detail in EMV at the pump.

4. Lottery that reconciles

Lottery is where counts go wrong. NRS LottoShield tracks instant tickets, online lotto sales and payouts at the register.

5. Tobacco, beer and age checks

Gas stations sell a lot of age-restricted products. Look for license ID scanning, and tobacco scan data reporting so manufacturers pay you for the tobacco you already sell. See Tobacco scan data, explained.

What it costs

NRS Petro is quoted per site, because it depends on your dispensers and whether you need the full platform or a retrofit. It starts with a free NRS site survey. For the store side:

  • Cheetah POS (required for Petro): $1,799 NRS list
  • Software plans from $19.95/mo with NRS PAY

(NRS list prices, October 2026.) Dipendra puts every cost in writing before you sign.
